Order limits

There are nine limits across three scopes: cart, product and collection. Each takes a minimum, a maximum, or both. Pick the scope by what you are protecting — margin, stock, or a specific product.

Applies to
  • All Shopify plans
  • The Simple Order Limit builder
Doesn't apply to
  • Conditional limits — those are Advanced Rules
Need a limit that only applies sometimes? See Advanced rules

Picking the right scope

Ask what you are actually protecting.

You want toUse
Stop unprofitable small ordersMinimum order amount
Make orders worth packing and shippingMinimum cart quantity
Stop resellers clearing a dropMaximum product quantity
Ration a whole limited rangeMaximum collection quantity
Sell in cases of 6, 12, 24Product bulk limit

Amount and quantity are the pair people most often mix up. A £200 minimum and a 10-item minimum behave completely differently on a store with a wide price range.

Minimums and maximums are different jobs

They share a form, and nothing else.

Minimums exist to protect margin. The risk is setting them too high and losing orders you would have wanted.

Maximums exist to protect stock and fairness. The risk is setting them too low and blocking your best customers.

Combining limits

One rule can hold several limits. A cart minimum and a per-product maximum in the same rule means the customer must clear the cart minimum and stay under the product cap.

If any limit in the rule fails, checkout is blocked and your message is shown.

For limits that should only apply in some situations — a country, a customer group, a date range — see Advanced rules.

Frequently asked

Can I set a minimum and a maximum together?

Yes. Add both to the same rule to create a band — at least 3, at most 10.

Can one rule hold limits on different scopes?

Yes. A rule can carry a cart limit and a product limit at once; the customer is blocked if any of them fails.

Which limit should I use for wholesale minimums?

Usually minimum order amount if the concern is margin, or minimum cart quantity if it is packing and shipping efficiency.
