Maximum order amount

Add a Cart Max Amount limit and enter the highest cart value you will accept online. Checkout is blocked above it, so large orders come to you another way.

Applies to
  • All Shopify plans
  • Cart value in your store currency
Doesn't apply to
  • Blocking a customer entirely
  • Item counts — use maximum cart quantity
Capping item count rather than value? Use a maximum cart quantity

The least intuitive limit in the app, and the one with the clearest reasons behind it: high-value orders carry the most chargeback risk, and often need a human before they ship.

Before you start

  • The value above which you want to handle an order yourself.
  • Where those customers should go instead — an email address, a quote form, a phone number.

Steps

1. Install Nex Validator

Search Nex Validator in the Shopify App Store, or use the button below. Approve the permissions and the app appears in your admin under Apps. There is a free trial, and it works on every Shopify plan.

2. Go to Simple Order LimitCreate Rule.

3. Give the rule a title, and switch Enable/Disable Limit on. A rule that is saved but not enabled looks identical to one that is not working.

4. Open the Cart tab, choose Cart Max Amount, and enter your maximum cart value.

5. Write the message, then save — and put the next step in it.

Verify it worked

  1. Cart above the cap → checkout blocked, message shows the alternative route.
  2. Cart at the cap → checkout completes.

Common setups

GoalMaximum
Limit chargeback exposureYour insured or comfortable ceiling
Route B2B enquiries to salesJust above a normal retail basket
Stock-check large orders firstWhatever you can ship from shelf
Deposit-required ordersYour deposit threshold

If wholesale buyers use the same storefront, this cap will hit them too. Advanced rules can exempt a tagged customer group.

Frequently asked

Why would I refuse a large order?

Usually fraud exposure, or because big orders need a quote, a deposit or a stock check. The cap turns an automatic sale into a conversation.

What should the message say?

Give them the next step. A cap with no route forward loses the order; "For orders over £5,000 email sales@" keeps it.

Does it apply to wholesale customers too?

On the Simple builder, yes — it applies to everyone. Advanced Rules can exempt a customer group.
