Minimum collection quantity

Add a Collection Min Quantity limit, pick the collection, and set the minimum. Checkout is blocked unless the cart holds at least that many items from anywhere in that collection.

Applies to
  • All Shopify plans
  • Any Shopify collection, manual or automated
Doesn't apply to
  • A minimum of one specific product — use minimum product quantity
Need a minimum on one product instead? Use minimum product quantity

Useful when the minimum belongs to a range rather than a product — a wholesale catalogue where buyers can mix freely as long as the total works.

Before you start

  • The collection, and the minimum across it.
  • A check for products that appear in more than one collection you are limiting.

Steps

1. Install Nex Validator

Search Nex Validator in the Shopify App Store, or use the button below. Approve the permissions and the app appears in your admin under Apps. There is a free trial, and it works on every Shopify plan.

2. Go to Simple Order LimitCreate Rule.

3. Give the rule a title, and switch Enable/Disable Limit on. A rule that is saved but not enabled looks identical to one that is not working.

4. Open the Collection tab, choose Collection Min Quantity, and pick the collection and set the minimum.

5. Write the message, then save, naming the collection — “Wholesale items are sold in sixes” is clearer than a generic minimum notice.

Verify it worked

  1. Cart with fewer items from the collection → blocked.
  2. Cart at the minimum, mixing several products from it → completes.
  3. Cart with items from an overlapping collection → behaves as you intend.

Frequently asked

Does it count items or distinct products?

Items from that collection. Six of one product in the collection satisfies a minimum of six.

What if a product sits in two collections with different rules?

Both apply. Check overlapping collections before going live, or you can build a cart that cannot satisfy either.

Does it apply when nothing from the collection is in the cart?

Test this against your own setup — whether an empty-of-that-collection cart is exempt or blocked determines whether you need a second rule.
