Minimum collection quantity

Set the minimum number of items customers must buy from a selected Shopify collection. Choose the collection and enter the minimum quantity. If the cart contains fewer than that minimum from the selected collection, checkout is blocked.

A Shopify collection is a group of products in your store. Example: if Minimum Quantity is 3, the customer needs at least 3 items from the selected collection. 2 items are blocked; 3 items are allowed.

Use Minimum collection quantity when customers can choose different products from the same collection, but they must buy a minimum number of items from that collection. Example: a wholesale collection has shirts, pants, and jackets. If the minimum is 3, the customer can mix products from that collection to reach the required quantity.

Before you start

Before creating the rule, decide:

  • Which Shopify collection the rule should apply to.
  • The minimum number of items customers must buy from that collection.
  • Whether any products belong to more than one collection that also has a quantity rule.

Steps

1. Install Nex Validator

If Nex Validator is not installed yet, install it from the Shopify App Store and approve the required permissions. If it is already installed, skip to the next step.

2. Go to Simple Order Limit → Create Rule.

3. Give the rule a clear title, such as “Minimum 3 items from collection.” Then make sure Enable/Disable Limit is turned on. If the rule is disabled, it will not apply to customer orders.

4. Open the Collection tab and select Collection Min Quantity. Enter the Minimum Quantity, then choose the collection or collections the rule should apply to.

Example: if Minimum Quantity is 3, the customer must have at least 3 qualifying items from the selected collection before checkout.

5. Add a clear message that tells customers what they need to change, then save the rule. For example: “Please add at least 3 items from this collection to continue.”

Verify it worked

Test the rule in these situations:

  1. Add fewer than 3 qualifying items from the selected collection. Checkout should be blocked.
  2. Add exactly 3 qualifying items from the selected collection. Checkout should continue.
  3. Mix different products from the selected collection and confirm they count correctly.
  4. Add products that are not in the selected collection. They should not count toward this minimum.
  5. If a product belongs to more than one collection with rules, test it and confirm the result is what you expect.

Test the exact number too. A minimum of 3 should allow 3, not require 4.

Frequently asked

Does it count items or distinct products?

Items from that collection. Six of one product in the collection satisfies a minimum of six.

What if a product sits in two collections with different rules?

Both apply. Check overlapping collections before going live, or you can build a cart that cannot satisfy either.

Does it apply when nothing from the collection is in the cart?

Test this against your own setup — whether an empty-of-that-collection cart is exempt or blocked determines whether you need a second rule.
