The cap that closes the obvious loophole. Limiting each product to two does nothing if the range has ten products — a collection cap limits the range as a whole.
Before you start
- The collection, and the cap across it.
- Whether an automated collection would be easier to maintain than a manual one.
Steps
1. Install Nex Validator
Search Nex Validator in the Shopify App Store, or use the button below. Approve the permissions and the app appears in your admin under Apps. There is a free trial, and it works on every Shopify plan.
2. Go to Simple Order Limit → Create Rule.
3. Give the rule a title, and switch Enable/Disable Limit on. A rule that is saved but not enabled looks identical to one that is not working.
4. Open the Collection tab, choose Collection Max Quantity, and pick the collection and set the cap.
5. Write the message, then save, naming the range so the customer knows which items to remove.
Verify it worked
- Cart above the cap, spread across several products in the collection → blocked.
- Cart at the cap → completes.
- Cart mixing collection and non-collection items → only the collection items count toward the cap.
Common setups
| Goal | Maximum |
|---|---|
| Limited edition line | 2 across the range |
| Regulated category | Whatever the rules require |
| Event merchandise | Per-attendee allowance |
| Clearance, to spread stock | 3–5 |
